‘The Flying Sikh’ no more

Milkha Singh was the only sportsman to win gold at the Asian Games in 400 meters race. He will be most remembered finishing the 400 meters race at fourth place at the final during the Olympic Games 1960.

New Delhi: Sadly, on Friday the legendary sportsman Milkha Singh known as the ‘The Flying Sikh’ lost his battle to COVID-19. He was 91 years old when he followed his beloved wife who has died just five days before, leaving  behind three daughters and one son.

Milkha Singh was the only sportsman to win gold at the Asian Games in 400 meters race. He will be most remembered finishing the 400 meters race at fourth place at the final during the Olympic Games 1960.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, that he had the honor to talk to Milkha Singh some days ago, not expecting this would be the last conversation.

Expressing his grief, Modi said, “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions.”
