Mumbai: India was totally unprepared when a ‘tsunami’ like wave of COVID-19 infections swept over the country in April. Millions of people suffered and thousands were killed. Since the ramp up of the nationwide vaccination drive and increase in vaccine supply, the number of new infections are on a steady decline since June.
On Monday, a report by the international newsagent CNN shared shocking details regarding a vaccine scam in Mumbai, which is under investigation by the Mumbai Police. From late May to beginning of June, thousands of people were dispensed fake vaccines at scam inoculation centres. The vaccination certificates given raised suspicion by some of the victims.
One of the fake vaccine hubs, was located at a housing society where residents were requested to pay cash. No one experienced any of the common side effects after the vaccination.
Across Mumbai city 12 scam vaccination sites had been set up, according to reports by Vishal Thakur, a senior official with the Mumbai Police Department. Some phony physicians injected the victims saline water instead of COVID-19 vaccine. Vishal Thakur said that an estimated 2,500 people received these fake vaccine doses. The criminals made $28,000 from the scam.
Vishal Thakur said, “They were using a hospital which was producing the fake certificates, vials, syringes”. Mumbai police arrested 14 culprits, including doctors, and as the investigation continues more arrests can be expected.
