A true, patriotic and gentleman Prime Minister with empathy would have spoken thus:
Covid has hurt all of us badly and taken away many of our near and dear ones. I feel your pain. I know you have suffered and continue to suffer the loss. I cannot bring back those you lost but I pledge to ensure that I will do everything in my power to lessen pain of others.I wish I had taken the advise of experts and not reduced our guard.
I take it upon myself that I let my guard down. I shouldn’t have conducted the massive election rallies and alerted the Uttarakhand CM on the Kumbh Mela. As a leader, I should have led by example.
We also made the mistake of not ordering for the vaccines when other countries were doing it. Exporting our vaccines was a mistake too. I should have known that for the country of the size of India, relying on two manufacturers would never serve our demand. We should have been in the market buying vaccines more than an year back. Better planning and execution were missing and it has cost us dear. I can’t correct the past but we are doing everything to vaccinate all of you at the earliest.
As we speak, our External Affairs Minister has visited friendly countries to procure materials and vaccines. The states were right when they wanted centre to be trusted with procurement and states for distribution. It was wrong of us to have let the states float tenders. It was never going to work and is neither fair and equitable. I am happy I am reversing this decision. It is important for us to develop scientific temper. While the ancient medicines have played a great part, we cannot let scientific research get questioned by irrational, illogical arguments. The doubts cast on scientifically proven medications by quacks should stop immediately.
I also would plan a massive overhaul of our medical infrastructure to deal with any future health emergency. I thank the Supreme Court for guiding us in the matter. The order from the apex court, after considering all aspects, is fair and transparent. I pledge to follow it in letter and spirit.I am sorry for all your losses of lives and livelihoods. I am gutted seeing the images of corpses floating in the Ganga and on the banks of Ganga. It is shameful that India is seen as a case study for Covid on what not to be. We have a lot of work to do to restore our image globally.
Let us fight this pandemic as one nation. I will rise above petty politics and lead by example. I hope that you will walk along with me. My best wishes are always with every Indian. Jai Hind. Narendra Modi.
